Advantages of Solid Hard Wood Furniture

The beauty of hardwoods is not skin deep, because of the natural characteristics each piece displays a face that is uniquely its own. Using stains that enrich the grains and protects the outer surface giving it even more longevity. Solid hardwoods can live with nicks and scratches, they are easily repaired and refinished, and their value is lasting.

What is Solid Hardwood?

Solid wood means just that. Each exposed part is made of genuine hardwood. In some areas, strips or boards are bonded with stronger-than-wood glue and other wood joinery techniques.

Remember, looks can be deceiving. What may look to be wood may be something else. Passing for solids might be: Hardwood Veneers and Hardwood Laminates. The term Ash, Maple, or Cherry finish is often used and simply refers to the color of the veneer or photographic reproduction used, it does not mean that the product is authentic hardwood.

Although those other products may look like wood, they don’t compare when it comes to holding nails and screws and withstanding the stresses, loads, shocks and abrasions of daily life. This again makes the production of fine furniture in solid hardwood an advantage.

How Do I Recognize Quality Solid Wood Furniture?

Some indicators to look for are:

1. Feel the weight of drawers and doors. High quality furniture has a sense of solidity.
   • drawers should slide easily
   • drawers should fit evenly & snug
   • drawers should have a solid bottom & sides
   • drawers should have dove tailed joints
   • drawer interior should be smooth to the touch, sanded and sealed
2. Inspect hinges to determine if they are solidly secure and can handle the load of the door.
3. Most quality case goods are built using floating construction. This allows for the expansions and contractions inherent in wood. A quality piece should have a solid frame and all corners should be tight with no gaps.

Care & Cleaning of Ndura™ Surfaces

General Cleaning:

A clean cotton or microfiber cloth saturated with a mixture of warm water (99%) and a mild, nonabrasive dish washing detergent (1%) can be used to clean, wiping in a vertical movement with light pressure.

Disinfecting Ndura Surface:

Using a clean microfiber cloth saturated with a solution of water (90%) and bleach (10%) is suggested to disinfect Ndura.

Approved & recommended cleaning agents:

• Windex®
• Clorox®
• Simple Green®
• Formula 409®
• Fantastic® antibacterial with Lemon Power®

All agents should be applied with a clean cotton or microfiber cloth, and wiping in a vertical motion with light pressure. Always read and follow the directions specified on the label of agent packaging. (Mixing agents is not suggested)

Cleaning agents/detergents should not contain:

Aromatic hydrocarbons, ester, ketones, halogenated hydrocarbons or alcohol above 25%. Vinegar-based detergents should not be used.

• No solvents (e.g. Paint thinners, turpentine, etc.)
• No abrasive detergents (e.g.Baking soda etc.)
• No furniture polish
• No denatured alcohols (e.g. white spirit, etc)
• No cleaner in combination with a brush or scrubbing
• Use of brushes and scouring pads is not suggested

Ndura Surfaces: Test Data

These are the findings submitted by an independent laboratory testing the Ndura™ surface.

These tests were conducted according to the procedures described in NEMA standards: LD3-2005.

Ndura has also been tested for heat resistance. The test was: Boiling water was poured over entire surface and the hot pot was placed on the surface and left for 40 minutes. The results were - no effect.
